At the age of 18, Ji Xiao made a decision that surprised everyone: she gave up her quota to stay in Beijing and rushed alone to the northwest desert to devote herself to national scientific research. No one knew that behind that seemingly hasty farewell lay her clear-headed longing for a larger world and her firm choice of self-worth. Dry data, rigorous experiments, and lonely winter nights—she nailed her youth to the lab bench and wrote her passion into every parameter correction. The Northwest did not fail her, nor did she fail this land.
