Sixty-eight-year-old stonemason Lu Zhenchuan removes a stone slab from his own kitchen to repair a bridge and save a feverish child. Unexpectedly, the slab transforms into a heavenly staircase. He climbs into the clouds, encounters a colossal qilin, and brings back a tongueless bronze bell. From the bell's shadow emerges Atong, a sharp-tongued, food-loving little qilin. When dry wells, torrential rains, collapsing mountains, and devastating floods threaten the village, Lu Zhenchuan uses his extraordinary ability to hear danger in stones, while Atong risks turning into a bronze statue. Together with the villagers, they work through the night to dig canals, relocate grain seeds, and divert the mountain floodwaters. After the flood recedes, the silent bronze bell rings once more, and the original stone slab that saved a child's life finally echoes again.
