During the plum rain season of 1992, the river in Qingxi Village, deep in the southern mountains, was clogged with silt, flooding the fields and reducing crop yields. Lin Wan, a young woman who had returned to her hometown, was mocked by the entire village as an overconfident fool when she proposed clearing the river on her own because of her heavy build and lack of help. Amid the rumors and ridicule, she began with a shovel on a muddy riverbank. She persevered through the mockery to clear Qingxi's waterways, reclaim wasteland for fruit cultivation, and dig fishponds. She stood firm against unscrupulous outside buyers who deliberately forced down prices, protecting the income the whole village earned from farming and aquaculture. She then took the lead in cutting paths through the mountains, revitalizing mountain-and-water homestays, and building a rural market, gradually turning the once-isolated mountain valley's lush mountains and clear waters into a treasure trove for every household.
