Wang family's father and brothers are all strong and sturdy, only he is physically weak and dreads blood, unable to do pig-slaughtering and farming chores. To avoid burdening his family, he relies on herb identification and creative braised food business to save up tuition fees, studying under Master Zhao. From a child student studying bitterly all the way to a Xiucai, along the way resisting local gentry's harassment, resolving prison crises, making close friend Zhang Wentao, and getting help from a escort agency. Deeply cultivating policy studies at the prefectural school, encountering numerous livelihood problems with pragmatic policy essays winning the prefect's appreciation, taking third place in the provincial examination in one stroke, the poor butcher's son steps out on a path to the heavens with ink and brush.
