Six-year-old Cheng Suisui loses both her parents and is despised by her entire family. She cannot even get a single filling bowl of rice. Unemployed aunt Cheng Wanhe takes her away with just 96 yuan and rents an old tailor shop in a small town. Relying on their craftsmanship and Suisui's exceptional ability to identify fabrics, the aunt and niece take orders to make a living, but face relatives who demand money and try to take the child away, as well as competitors who sabotage them with unfairly low prices. Wanhe protects the little girl's meals and education while leading female workers in starting their own business, helping women earn their own wages. When they return to the family home for Tomb-Sweeping Day, the elders force Suisui to kneel and thank her uncle and aunt for their supposed kindness. The little girl, who has always been afraid to speak up, finally voices the grievances buried in her heart and says goodbye to her parents. She takes her aunt's hand and says, "We have a home now." Together, they leave behind the cold and unwelcoming family dining table and return to the home where they are truly accepted.
