Zhou Ke, a young biology teacher at a prestigious urban middle school, is reassigned to teach in a remote rural town after openly challenging the principal. There, he meets Lei Longsi, a fellow teacher working in the same rural teaching program. The desolate campus, secretive colleagues, and singing that should never be heard in the middle of the night leave the two outsiders increasingly bewildered. When a mother kneels outside the school gate for days, holding a sign that reads 'Give Me Back My Daughter,' and the girl in the back row whom nobody will acknowledge repeatedly gazes out the window, Zhou Ke realizes he cannot remain silent like everyone else. For the sake of a deceased student and her heartbroken mother, the two young teachers, who had originally intended only to serve out their assignments and leave, summon the courage to uncover the truth.
