On the day of the imperial selection, Noble Lady Wang notices that Lin Lu, a newly arrived palace consort, recognizes the emperor through secret code words. Wang Guiren keeps a low profile and quietly observes. Lin Lu uses her knowledge to help the emperor strengthen the nation and its military, but gradually loses his favor because of their differences in ideals. Taking advantage of the rift between them, Wang Guiren secretly makes her moves. When Lin Lu becomes lost and confused, Wang Guiren awakens her with just a few words. In the end, Wang Guiren helps Lin Lu ascend the throne, then quietly leaves the palace once her work is done, reclaiming her own freedom and leaving others to make their own choices.
