In 1936, Lao Dan, a Henan farmer, was drafted by the Nationalist army shortly after his new marriage. He originally intended to kill a hundred Japanese devils and return home, but through eight years of the War of Resistance, he endured countless fierce battles, tempering himself from a fear-of-death recruit into a fierce veteran. As his comrades fell one by one and his homeland was swallowed by the Yellow River floods, he finally understood that only by driving away the Japanese devils could he save the people around him.
