A shadow play, half a lifetime of changing seasons. Shen Changhe, a folk shadow puppetry performer, takes the stage despite being ill and encounters Qin Wangshu, a lonely, abandoned boy whom he takes in and teaches everything he knows about the art of shadow puppetry. Born with a naturally powerful, dragon-like singing voice, the boy studies and trains tirelessly, enduring countless hardships. Along the way, he faces harassment from fellow performers and oppression by the powerful, but also receives guidance from masters and help from benefactors. Remaining true to the heart of shadow puppetry, he overcomes one obstacle after another and vows to bring this traditional art to audiences across the world.
