Forty-six-year-old Chen Jianguo loses his job after the production line at the textile factory where he works is dismantled. Every day, he goes to a bench in Riverside Park and pretends to be going to work. When his daughter needs 120 yuan for school fees, his hand freezes for three seconds as he searches his wallet. His wife, Liu Fang, signs up for nursing training to earn a caregiver certificate, while Grandma brings out the 32,000 yuan she has saved in her rice jar to help the family through the crisis. Chen Jianguo finds temporary work at a community repair station, fixing water pipes, doors, windows, and bicycles. He eventually becomes a permanent employee and takes on an apprentice named Xiao Sun. Chen Xiaoyu goes from hiding his toolbox, calling him her 'uncle,' and sneaking through the back entrance to openly telling others that her father works at the repair station and walking to school on her own.
