In a northern rural village in the 1970s, five-year-old Guoguo is playful and clever, engaging in a daily battle of wits with her grandma Li Xiuying. She is constantly getting into trouble; when playing and neglecting the wheat causes the rations to be soaked by the rain, she has a flash of insight and uses the soaked wheat to make maltose. Going up the mountain to gather herbs, poking wild beehives to sell honey and supplement the household income, and even relying on her sharp tongue to help villagers mediate conflicts, she becomes the little peace-maker of the village. From the awkwardness of falling into a puddle to making money to support the family, Guoguo protects her mother and this home in her own way. Though grandma calls her a home-wister on the outside, in her heart she dotes on this little girl more and more. With the big family arguing and bustling, life becomes increasingly full of hope.
