In her previous life, Pei Yiyun, the legitimate daughter of the Pei family, was framed by her half-sister, Pei Ruyan, using a sinister spell that allowed her to bear someone else's child. She became a puppet forced to carry another woman's baby and ultimately died a tragic death. Reborn on the very day she entered the palace, Pei Yiyun resolves to change her fate. She takes large amounts of musk in an attempt to make herself infertile, but her plans repeatedly fail. As her due date approaches, she discovers that the key to breaking the spell is controlling the distance between them. Using this discovery, she escapes the palace on the same day Pei Ruyan gives birth, forcing her half-sister to endure the delivery of triplets. One of the babies is a red-haired foreign child, exposing Pei Ruyan's affair. After Pei Yiyun escapes, Pei Ruyan's crimes come to light. To protect the family, the Pei matriarch takes the blame for having an affair with a foreign guard.
