Wang Guilan, a middle-aged woman from Northeast China, runs an old-fashioned restaurant that is on the verge of closing down, and money is tight. Her daughter, Zhang Wen, goes traveling and asks her mother to take in Lin Wan, a young woman from southern China who has traveled a long way to seek refuge with her and is devastated by a string of misfortunes. Without prying into her past, Wang Guilan gently keeps her company through the warmth of everyday life, gradually helping her heal.
