In 1984, Huaishuwan wanted the whole village to pool money to run a brick factory. Two thousand per household, splitting five thousand at the end of the year. My father had saved two thousand yuan for over a decade and was just about to hand it over when I stopped him. I only asked four questions: Has the soil been tested? Can the coal price be locked? Who runs the kiln? To whom are the bricks sold? Not a single one could be answered. My father slapped the receipt on the table right on the spot and withdrew his stake. That day, the whole village laughed at him for being cowardly and good-for-nothing, saying he would never make a fortune in his life. Half a year later, the brick factory kiln fires were completely extinguished, and dozens of households blocked the door demanding their money. As for my family, with those two thousand yuan, we bought an old threshing machine.
