In 983, rural schoolteacher Xian Qingqiu accidentally hears her stepsister's inner voice, seeing through her stepsister Luo Huiping's scheme to steal her engagement. She decisively breaks off the engagement, but is arranged by her family to marry into the deep mountains in place of her sister, becoming a wife to the hunter Lan Tianye. Xian Qingqiu argues reasonably and strongly, refusing to leave until she gets a double dowry. On the wedding day, Lan Tianye has not returned from hunting in the mountains, and only a mother-in-law with impaired mobility and an innocent, lovely younger sister welcome her at the door. Xian Qingqiu originally thought she had jumped into a fire pit, but through daily interaction she discovers that although Lan Tianye is taciturn and few-worded, he is delicate in mind and puts every little detail about her on his mind.
