The Kindhearted Watermelon Buyer Bought Watermelons for Ten Years, Yet Was Driven Away
For ten years, Lin Qiusheng has bought watermelons in the village without ever forcing prices down or delaying payments. Even when watermelon prices fell to 0.4 yuan, he continued paying 0.7 yuan, covering the difference out of his own pocket. Yet a single boast from an outsider watermelon trader—“I'll pay 0.3 yuan more than Lin Qiusheng”—was enough to make the entire village return their deposits, tear up their contracts, surround his vehicle, smash it, and hurl insults at him. When the swindler disappeared with their money and their watermelons rotted in the fields with no buyers, the villagers knelt outside Lin's door and begged him to return. Lin Qiusheng left them with just one sentence: “You grew those watermelons yourselves, so eat them yourselves.” He walked away and never looked back.
