On the day his son inherits the title, Shen Yaoguang's matrilocal husband Lu Zheng, who faked his death for ten years, returns with a concubine, attempting to usurp the Shen family fortune. Her carefully raised biological son Lu Chengzhou has even colluded with his father early on to strip away his mother's managerial rights. Faced with betrayal from her nearest and dearest, Shen Yaoguang exposes the fake-death hoax and evidence of embezzlement, choosing the adopted son Shen Ruiming instead to inherit the marquis title. The youth once looked down upon is now a general guarding the frontier. He returns to protect his mother, joining Shen Yaoguang to reclaim the family estate, bring the traitors to justice, make them bear the consequences, and allow her to reclaim a life of her own.
