Coroner Su Wan uses an ancestral mark to recognize in the pauper's grave that the brutally killed person is Su Qiaoan, the son who married into the Chancellor's Manor as a matrilocal husband. Realizing the son-in-law in the manor is actually a fake, she suppresses her grief to seek the killer and exact revenge. She sneaks into the Chancellor's Manor to test the waters, exposes the fake husband Xiao Chengjin and Shen Zhiyi, repeatedly faces assassination attempts, joins forces with Pei Yan to investigate, and uncovers the conspiracy: former dynasty's deposed crown prince Xiao Chengjin is supported by Wei Jin of the Eastern Depot to bide his time, and Imperial Noble Consort Cui Yurong colludes with them to disrupt the government. Su Qiaoan was killed for stumbling upon the secret, and Su Wan gathers evidence to maneuver among various factions, publicly exposing the crimes at the palace banquet, with all villains bringing to justice. She delivers her son from suffering, lets go of her hatred, and gains a new life.
