Jiang Nianchu is forced by her family, who favor sons over daughters, to marry Cao Debiao, an alcoholic who beats his wife, in exchange for a bride price to buy her brother a house. In despair, she jumps into the river and is saved by retired soldier Xu Zhengyang. She stays at the Xu family's place to help manage their orchard business, and the two gradually develop feelings for each other. Her greedy family and Cao Debiao repeatedly come to their doorstep to stir up trouble and sabotage them. Together, the two join hands to fight against the harassment, bring the villains to justice, and Jiang Nianchu breaks free from her native family to harvest a peaceful and happy little home.
