Mountain village boy Zhou Yuan followed his grandfather's dying wish to guard the home for three years, and encountered An Ruoxi, the myriad-phase spiritual woman infected with a special desire poison, in the mountains, forming an accidental bond. An Ruoxi discovered his grade-two thunder spirit root and left after passing on basic cultivation techniques. Zhou Yuan obtained the ancestral turtle shell, which conceals the remnant soul of an ancient Dao ancestor and can consume life blood to deduce heavenly treasures and ancient martial arts. He gained the earth marrow stone, night-cleaving saber, qilin heavenly patterns, and other supreme treasures, and entered the Wanxiang Spirit Sect. Along the way, he slew evil cultivators, got to know Wu Liangran, Tian Jiu, and others, and later found out that An Ruoxi's best friend Liu Yiyi colluded with the Evil Spirit Valley, long administering desire poison in pills. The two joined forces to clear out villains like the valley's black and white evil sheep, ferret out sect traitors, and jointly resist the evil forces.
