Hua Xiaolan, a useless modern-day woman, is knocked by a chandelier into the game world of Hua Mulan. Her nightmare begins immediately: she dies four times in a row, with only one life remaining. To survive, she has no choice but to retrace Hua Mulan's path of enlisting in the army in her father's place. Reborn as a young girl, Hua Xiaolan trains hard in martial arts and goes to war in her father's stead. She captures spies, resolves a plague crisis, and fights bloodily at Xiaguan Pass. The once-timid coward rises against all odds to become a mighty female warrior protecting her country. Along the way, she and the cold-faced General Zhao Junsheng go from bickering adversaries to comrades who entrust their lives to each other, gradually falling in love. After clearing the game and returning to reality, Zhao Junsheng crosses through time and space to find her, and the two finally become a couple.
