In the sixteenth year of the Republic of China, the once-prosperous Lu family of Shanghai suddenly falls into ruin. The family patriarch is poisoned in a secret attack and falls into a coma; the eldest young master is ambushed, left disabled, and undergoes a drastic change in temperament; the second young master contracts a stubborn illness on his way home from abroad; and the third young master, despite his impressive skills, suffers repeated setbacks. The matriarch struggles alone to keep their heavily indebted household afloat. On a snowy night, Shen Wan takes in Suisui, a three-year-old beggar on the verge of death. Suisui possesses extraordinary insight, allowing her to help her family overcome their difficulties and uncover the mastermind behind the plot against the Lu family. The once-dilapidated Lu residence rises again to become one of Shanghai's most prestigious households.
