Twenty-two-year-old Chen Mengyun is brought into the city by her parents, only to be publicly humiliated at a party because she has no performing skills. She flees to the rooftop of her dormitory, where she unexpectedly encounters Li Xiang'e, a former famous Cantonese opera performer. Mistaking Chen Mengyun for her deceased daughter, Li Xiang'e pours everything she knows into teaching her. On the day of the cultural troupe auditions, Chen is locked in a room, but Li Xiang'e helps her escape and take the stage, where her singing astonishes everyone. The teacher and student save each other: Xiang'e begins to overcome the grief of losing her daughter, while Chen Mengyun learns to speak up for her dreams. She joins the provincial opera troupe and, after enduring countless trials, eventually represents China on the international stage in Paris. She moves overseas audiences to tears with Cantonese opera and allows the world to hear once again the unfinished performance of Li Xiang'e.
