A modern young woman travels back in time and becomes Lin Qianqian, an orphaned girl in ancient times who is abused and mistreated. Along with her younger brother, Lin Yulong, she suffers under the cruelty of their biased grandmother and vicious stepmother, Ding Yuxiang, while their useless father turns a blind eye. All they have left is poisonous cassava and a dilapidated old house. However, Lin Qianqian knows an ancient method of removing cassava's toxins and turns it into high-quality starch to sell to restaurants, paving her way to a better life. The Lin family repeatedly makes things difficult for her, extorts money from her, and even tries to marry her off for a bride price, but she overcomes every obstacle. By collecting cassava from the villagers, she expands her business, builds a new brick house, and reclaims her mother's belongings. The Lin family eventually suffers the consequences of its own actions, descending into domestic turmoil and family separation. Meanwhile, Lin Qianqian establishes a thriving business, sends her younger brother to school, helps her neighbors, and builds a peaceful, stable life.
