Xiao Wang, a 25-year-old young man from the countryside, comes to Beijing to make a living and becomes an apprentice at Morning Light Bakery. Every day, he wakes up at 2:40 a.m. and learns kneading, fermentation, and baking from the experienced baker Wang Jianguo. From awkwardly making his first baguette, to repeatedly practicing the butter-laminating technique for croissants, to enduring the frustration of failed toast, he rebuilds his dignity through flour and sweat. The bakery becomes his window into the city, where regular customers buying breakfast, old songs playing on the radio, and Master Wang's memories of his late wife intertwine to form a warm portrait of life beneath the city's surface.
