Ink Falls, Leaving Traces on the Block follows Shen Yan, master craftsman Fang Huai, apprentice Xu He, and printing specialist Luo Jing as they create a floral-patterned print using a pearwood block in a traditional woodblock printing workshop. They carefully examine the wood grain, transfer the design in reverse, and carve it stroke by stroke. During test printing, they check the amount of ink, paper alignment, and wiping pressure before proceeding with the final prints. The damp paper is aired, dried, and stacked flat with sheets of protective paper in between. Finally, every print is inspected individually to ensure consistent lines, negative space, paper surfaces, and batch quality. Amid wood shavings and the fragrance of ink, an age-old craft is passed down through meticulous attention to every step.
