In an unspecified year of the Republic of China, Tongcheng is rife with undercurrents of unrest. The warlord's fate on the front lines remains unknown, while his five sons have each suffered their own misfortunes, including injuries and disappearances, leaving only his wife, Zhou Yanjun, to hold the family together. Meanwhile, their rival, the Qin family, has reached the height of its power by siding with foreigners and is plotting to seize the warlord's residence and hand over control of Tongcheng to outsiders. At this moment, a lucky star and a disaster star are born to the Qin family's mistress of the household, Ruan Qingyu, and concubine, Zhou Xiuqin, respectively. Qin Shou, the head of the Qin family, is tired of his wife and favors his concubine. He therefore abandons the lucky-star baby and keeps the disaster-star baby, dreaming of making a fortune, unaware that this decision will mark the beginning of the Qin family's downfall.
