Xue Xiangyi, the only daughter of the Xue family, has been married to Kong Lin'an for three years. She has poured her entire 100,000-tael dowry into the marriage and sold medicinal herbs and grain to help him quell an epidemic in Liangzhou. But when Kong Lin'an returns, he brings along his concubine, Lin Yuniang, and their two children. He wants Xue Xiangyi to become his co-wife while taking away her household management authority and the Xue family's pharmacy, Baohetang. Kong Lin'an, his mother, and his younger sister scheme against her at every turn, even plotting to ruin her reputation. With her heart finally dead to him, Xue Xiangyi resolves to divorce. Armed with the property and connections her grandfather left her, she seeks the Crown Prince's help and receives the title of County Lady of Long'an from the Empress. With the imperial decree, she dissolves the marriage and reclaims every last bit of her family's property.
