Retired Lin Fugen returns to Liuyegou with his savings, wanting to check on the mutual-aid cafeteria he funded. He had remitted 470,000 back to the village for his cousin Zhang Meilian to manage on his behalf, but unexpectedly the cafeteria is abandoned and he finds himself reviled by the villagers. Zhang Meilian lies that the funds were used for emergencies, but Lin Fugen accidentally overhears and learns that she embezzled the money and still wants to continue extorting him. Visiting neighboring villagers and seeing the hard lives of the elderly and children, he publicly presents transfer receipts to expose the scam. Zhang Meilian's family is sentenced, the stolen money recovered, the cafeteria rebuilt, and Lin Fugen stays in the countryside to spend his later years peacefully with Cuiping.
