After the family land is seized, the widowed Shen Wanqiao and her children are driven to the brink of desperation. Their stray dog, Ah Huang, leads them to a hidden spring in a barren mountain hollow, where they find wild ginseng and reishi mushrooms. By chance, they also save Shen An's life, and their circumstances gradually improve. Shen Wanqiao learns to make pickles and tofu, takes on grain merchants selling adulterated rice at the county grain station, and leads the village in establishing a cooperative to help everyone prosper. The little girl she picked up on a snowy night three years ago turns out to be the greatest lucky star the Shen family could ever have!
