He honors their agreement, always paying his rent in full and on time, and remains grateful that they gave him a place when he needed one. But when business takes off, the couple breaks their promise not to raise the rent, hiking the annual price from 100,000 to 300,000 yuan and hoping the hefty renovation costs will force Gu Cheng to give in. Refusing to be held hostage, Gu Cheng decisively rents a larger, more affordable new shop across the street and restores the original premises to their bare-shell condition.
