Shen'er goes away to learn the craft of growing mulberries and returns to the barren Mulberry Village. The southern slope behind the village has been abandoned for years, and the villagers only grow coarse grains, leaving their livelihood to heaven. Shen'er proposes planting mulberries, but is opposed by Uncle Shen, who thinks there is no way to sell them. Insisting on trial planting, Shen'er clears the slope, grafts and raises seedlings, prunes and thins fruits with A Shi and Daniu. After enduring pests and rainy weather, they finally harvest mulberries, sun-dry them, boil jam, brew wine, make paste and candied fruit, open up sales channels, lead the whole village in turning the wasteland into a mulberry orchard, and let the fragrance of mulberries float all over the mountain village.
