In 1982, in Gujiawan, three-and-a-half-year-old Xiaoxiao is branded a “jinx” by the villagers because she can sense the sea and predict storms. Despite the ridicule, Zhao Ping'an, a poor fisherwoman, adopts her. From then on, schools of fish, pearls, and ambergris bring one breakthrough after another. Rather than coveting sudden wealth, Ping'an relies on honesty and courage to turn good fortune into a legitimate business. Eventually, she leads the villagers in selling seafood and pursuing prosperity, while bringing family affection and hope back to her impoverished little household.
