Gua Er went out and learned the skill of planting cucumbers, and returned to the barren Cucumber Village. The south slope behind the village had been abandoned for many years, and the villagers only planted miscellaneous grains, depending on the weather for food. Gua Er proposed planting cucumbers, which was opposed by Uncle Gua, who thought there was no road to sell them. Gua Er insisted on trial planting, clearing the slope and opening wasteland with A Shi and Da Niu, raising seedlings and transplanting them, building frames and pruning. After experiencing pest damage and cloudy rainy weather, they finally harvested cucumbers, pickled paste and dried them in the sun, opened up sales channels, and led the whole village to turn the barren slope into a vegetable garden, making the cucumber fragrance fill the mountain village. The whole village established a rule not to smoke and to grow good cucumbers.
