In the bitter winter of the 1970s, Sui Sui, a three-and-a-half-year-old girl from Xinghua Village, is abandoned in the snow at the village entrance by her mother, Lu Mei, who favors boys over girls. Lu Zheng, her uncle whom everyone avoids, braves the blizzard to rescue the frozen little girl and take her back to his dilapidated thatched hut. Everyone thinks they won't survive the harsh winter, but no one expects Sui Sui to be a little lucky star. Wild rabbits wander straight into their traps, wild eggs, wild ginseng, and reishi mushrooms appear one after another, and river fish leap right into their baskets. With the good fortune Sui Sui brings him, Lu Zheng turns his fate around in those difficult times and devotes himself to protecting little Sui Sui.
