After graduating from an agricultural university, Chen Zhiyuan returns to his village to run a fertilizer shop. He sells fertilizer to villagers at prices close to cost and regularly allows them to buy on credit. Seeing how profitable the business could be, his uncle Wei Dafu joins forces with village chief Liu Dehou to stir up the villagers under the pretense that the fertilizer is overpriced, eventually forcing Chen Zhiyuan to close his shop and leave the village. A month later, the fertilizer sold by Wei Dafu is found to contain substandard ingredients, devastating the villagers' farmland. Wei Dafu flees with the money. Desperate, the villagers turn to Chen Zhiyuan for help. He tells them to clean up the damaged land themselves first before he provides a soil improvement plan. In the end, Wei Dafu and Liu Dehou are punished according to the law, the damaged farmland gradually recovers, and Wangtian Village achieves a bumper harvest.
