A Dragon in Cangwu: Greed Is Hard to Overcome
A jade dragon has guarded Mount Cangwu for a thousand years, yet no one knows its name. When the ninth bolt of heavenly lightning strikes, the dragon falls into a mountain ravine, where two siblings, A He and A Yuan, rescue it. The hunter Zhao Tu secretly steals its scales and sells them to Qian Wanguan for a hundred gold pieces each. Greed spreads throughout the village. The villagers surround the mountain, set iron chains, cut off the water supply, and demand the dragon's core. The dragon does not resist. Instead, it unfurls its tail and says, "Take it." As the siblings stand in front of the dragon, Zhao Tu repents and carries a bell up the mountain to block the iron chains. Qian Wanguan is taken away, leaving behind the warning, "That dragon won't live much longer." The dragon must face the nine heavenly thunders once again. Its inner demon asks, "You have guarded the human world for a thousand years. Has the human world ever protected you?" The ninth bolt falls, illuminating the mountain like daylight. When the peach blossoms bloom, the jade dragon coils at the village entrance, drinking rice soup. Human greed is harder to overcome than heavenly tribulations, while the loyalty in human hearts shines brighter than a dragon's pearl.
