Out of a moment of kindness, A Gui uses his last sip of water to save a three-legged golden toad and receives a genuine gold coin in return, which allows him to open a small shop. However, his greed soon grows, and he demands even greater wealth. As a result, his fortune turns into worthless dead lead, his business goes bankrupt, and he falls into debt. The county government sentences him to work off his debts but allows him to keep the little shop he originally earned through his kindness. A Gui carries sacks at the docks, runs his business honestly, refuses to keep money he finds, rejects illicit wealth, and helps others in times of danger. Eventually, he repays all his debts. When offered a position of great power, he chooses to remain true to himself and stay with his family, finally understanding that the true blessings in life come from working hard, being content with what one has, and keeping one's word.
