Lu Qinniang, a widow of the Zhang family, in order to repay an old favor, exhausts her family fortune at the market to buy Xiao Yan, a fallen, paralyzed general who was sold off. This move causes an already impoverished family to plunge into the desperate plight of running out of food for the New Year, and further invites bullying and kicking when they are down from the outside world. In this home full of feces and urine yet boiling with vital energy and extreme protectiveness, Xiao Yan, whose heart was originally as dead as ashes and who intended to seek death, is gradually healed by the rough yet sincere family affection of Lu and her daughters. His icy, dead heart completely melts, rekindling his desire to live, and he completes a two-way redemption with the Zhang family.
