On a frosty night, the ancient temple's frost bell rings on its own without a breeze, the Spirit-Crossing Jade Talisman loses its light, and someone goes missing along the mountain path. Zhong Ling, the elderly monk guarding the temple, a night-patrol imperial censor, and a postal station courier investigate, discovering that a fake spirit guide is luring people onto a ghostly path, while a Night-Devouring Ghost traps departed souls with its calls. Following the reversed frost patterns on the scroll, they find the Spirit-Crossing Stone Altar and protect the jade talisman, using the bell's resonance to reopen the winding road back. Facing interference and the stubborn attachments of the lonely dead, they help the departed souls see the way and leave of their own accord. Before dawn, the fake spirit guide is escorted down the mountain, and the frost bell regains its clear ring, once again guarding the mountain path.
