Lu Shantang, a treasure seeker from Qingwu Village, accidentally encounters an auspicious sign in the form of a three-legged golden toad, attracting the attention of a greedy businessman, Mr. Qian, who uses threats and tempting offers to force him to capture the toad. Lu Shantang sets a trap and takes revenge with a fake golden toad, driving Mr. Qian insane and landing him in the hospital. After his fraudulent earnings are frozen and his treasure-guiding bell begins behaving strangely, Lu Shantang comes to his senses. Just then, a con artist named Zhao Laogui appears, using the golden toad's name to swindle people. Lu Shantang reports him to the police and puts a stop to his scheme. With the golden toad as its central thread, the story reveals how greed destroys people and why one must follow the rules and walk the righteous path.
