Herb-gathering girl Jiang Ying rescues Bai Ze, a spiritual deer with an arrow in its belly that can speak, at her home. Hunters track the deer to the courtyard to search for it, and Jiang Ying quick-wittedly fools everyone using the bloodstains of a dead hen. She meticulously treats Bai Ze's barbed arrow wound, hiding the spiritual deer in the woodshed to recover. Just as the two are talking, mother-in-law Zhang Guilan returns, notices something unusual in the courtyard, and insists on going into the woodshed to check. Jiang Ying desperately tries to stop her, and the mother-in-law brings up again that a strange hunter has come to the village, her words full of suspicion as crisis shrouds the small courtyard once more.
