Shen Niangzi gave birth to a pair of fraternal twins. Their elder daughter Mingzhu was born holding a golden bead and was deeply doted on by Zhao Fuzi, while their younger son Zhao Ling was born with fine scales on his body, was regarded as a monster, and was despised by his biological father. Although Zhao Ling could not speak, he possessed the supernatural ability to command beasts, silently dissolving a locust plague and snake infestation for the village. Because of Mingzhu's greed for merit and her biological father's prejudice, Zhao Ling entered the mountains with a wounded heart. Years later, when a great disaster struck the village, Zhao Ling led hundreds of beasts to save the people, finally bringing the truth to light. Having survived the thunder tribulation and shed his fine scales, Zhao Ling returned good for evil, using his life to protect his family and the mountain forests, portraying a touching myth about family redemption and original sincerity.
