During a torrential downpour in a mountain ravine, Shen Wanhe, a destitute man drowning in debt, rescues a talking Qilin. To repay him for saving its life, the Qilin gives him two naturally shed scales. Place one in water, and within seven days it will produce seven valuable rainbow fish in seven colors. Shen Wanhe uses the fish to pay off his debts and experiences the thrill of sudden wealth for the first time. But when having enough turns into wanting even more, the scales given in gratitude become bargaining chips to be forcibly taken. The rainbow fish grow more and more vibrant, while the price grows heavier. Only when the Qilin is gravely wounded and the scam collapses does Shen Wanhe finally understand that the hardest thing to hold on to has never been wealth, but the ability to say, "Enough."
