Retired teacher Ma Huimin has been a widower for three years. Holding a million in savings and an old house, he worries about having no one to care for him in his old age. Hearing an old friend recount how elderly parents are shunned by their children, he decides to test them. He fabricates the illusion of an investment failure with a debt of one hundred thousand, and summons his three children. His eldest and second sons despise him for being penniless, treating him harshly and calculatingly.
