Zhao Changshun, a carpenter, is fed up with foreman Zhou Shoucheng paying only 260 yuan a day. He takes six fellow workers to join Qian Fulai, who offers 330 yuan per day. With daily payment and extra bonuses for working quickly, everyone is thrilled. But soon, back-to-back night shifts, deposits deducted for tools, unpaid downtime, thin-walled steel pipes, and loose fasteners begin to pile up. The extra 70 yuan is being squeezed out of materials, working hours, and safety. When the supports make ominous noises and the formwork collapses during the ninth-floor concrete pour, Changshun narrowly escapes death and finally understands the true value of a day's wages: it is not about how much you are promised, but whether you can earn that money and return home safely.
