In the early 1990s, Lin Dongmei, in order to get household registration and schooling for her daughter Miaomiao, married Huo Yan, who became disabled after saving someone. Huo Yan's uncle misappropriated his income and position, but Lin Dongmei argued logically and strongly, leading the couple to split the household and live independently. Lin Dongmei set up a stall selling handmade fish balls, encountering harassment from peers, and the two worked hand in hand to get through the difficulties.
