Shen Nianyun, a married woman in Dengcun Village, is kind-hearted. By the river, she encounters Wanying, a mysterious woman in thin clothes, and gifts her a hand-sewn garment. She does not know that Wanying is a river deity lying low in this water to undergo a mortal tribulation; this simple kindness imbued with worldly warmth becomes the warmest bond on the other's path to enlightenment. In the end, Wanying achieves complete merit and is officially enthroned as a deity, yet she still often wears that mortal attire, silently guarding the village by the river and that soft-hearted woman.
