In Xiangzhang Town, there is a custom of marrying off daughters and cutting down camphor trees to make dowry chests. Xiang Wan and Xiang Nuan are a pair of twin sisters. Their parents dote on Xiang Nuan, cutting down Xiang Wan's camphor tree to craft dowry chests for Xiang Nuan, while endlessly demanding Xiang Wan's savings and belongings. On the eve of her wedding, Xiang Wan's heart turns to ash; she bypasses her maiden family to go to Switzerland with Cheng Moyuan, where she receives the love of her husband and mother-in-law, becomes pregnant, and builds her own little family. After marriage, Xiang Nuan is extravagant and wasteful, refuses to do housework, and an outbreak of conflict with her husband leads to divorce. Xiang Wan's parents and older brother suddenly see the light, and travel far to Switzerland carrying the newly remade camphor wood chests in an attempt to make amends to Xiang Wan, but the belated apologies cannot smooth away the scars.
