Lin He is driven out to a dilapidated house at the foot of the mountain, while her husband, Lu Qingshan, is bedridden and unable to move. When she goes up the mountain to dig for bamboo shoots, she unexpectedly unearths a baby girl clutching a bamboo shoot. Overnight, the baby grows into a three-year-old girl, whom she names Shunshun. With just a touch of her little hands, Shunshun can make dead branches sprout and barren land gush with spring water. Lin He clears the wasteland to grow vegetables, sells wild mushrooms, and raises fruit trees. Just as life begins to improve, her mother-in-law, Zhao Guizhi, arrives with her sister-in-law, Wu Qiaoyun, to snatch the child, the water, and the fruit. The village bully, Ma Sanwang, repeatedly tries to take Shunshun away, forcing her to make dead trees bloom. The child is stolen, locked in a cellar, and loaded onto a cart. Lin He and Lu Qingshan pursue them all the way to a broken bridge. In the end, Ma Sanwang is sentenced, Shunshun is officially registered as part of the family, and the barren hillside is transformed into a mountain of flowers and fruit.
